Speech Lawyer Aginst Torture in 9th international symposuim Aginst Isolation

I would like to say I am so happy to be able to attend your ninth symposium.
Nine years have past and the human rights in our societies have fallen back and more people are suffering from the persecution, the torture, and degradation of their dignity.
In the name of war against terrorism, many people in Irag lost their rights as human beings. Thousands of Iraqi people have been sent to prison without any reason, without any rights and without a judge to look at their cases. They stay in prison for many years without being guilty and without any investigation file. They are exposed to systematic torture and rape.
In Iraq there are now 206 prisons, 53 of which are secret prisons. Here the human rights are violated in the worst possible way. According to our sources, there are now 320.000 prisoners in Iraq. Of course the Iraqi government does not acknowledge these figures, but we get these figures from documents showing the cost of food for the prisoners.
All the horrific torture in Iraqi prisons - public of private – takes place under the supervision of the highest leaders of the Iraqi government. This is revealed in a recent document on the site www.wikileaks.org.

We have not heard or seen any punishment of the security services that violated the rights of the prisoners.
That policy of immunity has led to the increase of cases of torture, rape and also enforced disappearance of thousands of prisoners.
More than 35.000 people are in secret prisons and their human rights are systematically violated. This violence leads to self incrimination in order to protect themselves from further torture and rape. Some of them have been in prison since 2004. Judges are prohibited from access to the jails.
There are also thousands of detainees listed as missing. Neither their family nor national or international human rights organizations have any idea about their fate.
The Iraqi government does not acknowledge the existence of political prisoners in Iraq. All who are in the opposition or have differences with government are called "terrorists" and are denied their rights.
Many people and international organizations have talked and wrote about the dramatic human rights abuses by U.S.A occupation and the Iraqi government but unfortunately there has been no improvement in the rights of Iraqi prisoners. Their position has worsened.
As long as the Iraqi government receives support from the international community but is not punish for violating human rights, the policy of torture, abuse, intimidation and rape in the Iraqi prisons will continue.

I ask you my comrades to condemn the abuse of Iraq prisoners, which abuse exceeds the worst conceivable crimes.
